"One Man's Quest for Balance"
BALANCED ROCK SCULPTURE
Remic Rapids Park, Ottawa_1987-2023
Origins and inspirations:
The day i arrived in 1986, I discovered a "Power Spot", as taught by Don Juan Mateus, a Yacqui shaman, and documented by Anthropologist & author, Carlos Castaneda.
A 'Power Spot' is a place which offers peace, empowerment, and healing. When i arrived on the site, I felt all of this instantly. This sense of place has become established over the years, and has become a gathering place for the public to relax and be nurtured by the site's energy.
The art of balance has been inspired by a life long study and practise of Taoism and Transcendental Meditation. Research in Indigenous cultures has provided an alignment with these values, and each project has a theme, often referring to indiginal heritage of the site and various Indigenous peoples of North America
All rocks for the sculptures come from the site, and the installation is different each year, with a different theme and story. The site's heritage is upon unceded Anishinaabe-Algonquin territory, as is most of the Ottawa-Gatineau region. The project, sponsored & funded by the National Capital Commission, since 2000, has allowed an un-compromised evolution of the project, as well as validating the value to the community & environment on the Ottawa/Kichi Zibi River *************************
