"One Man's Quest for Balance"
"River Spirits" A Canada Council Arts grant funded the "Art of Balance" project. With a Canada Arts Council "Explorations" Grant, the season began in June and continued into November. The art's grant grant allowed for three different intsallations throughout the season. The first was from June-July, and completely blown apart by a severe storm at the same time of the first interview. The second, Aug.-Sept, became larger, and more durable with weather, but was completely vandalized the night before the Labour Day weekend. The third installation, having to consider human nature, began in Sept., and continued until November. This installation included cement, and gave title to the project, "River Spirits", rising again. The use of cement was experimental, and became molding between the previously balanced rocks. This installation with cement, allowed the sculptures to be very stable and increasd the size and height of the sculptures upto nearly 15 feet or 4 meters. This last collection came down in early Dec., with a record cold month and high river. Bill Reid's famous sculpture, "Spirit of Haida Gwaii" provided the inspiration for "River Spirits in a Canoe".
