BALANCED ROCK SCULPTURE

Remic Rapids Park, Ottawa_1987-2024

Origins and inspirations:

The day I discovered the site in 1986, I immediately saw and felt a "Power Spot", as I had learned from Don Juan Mateus, a Yacqui shaman, as documented by Anthropologist & author, Carlos Castaneda.

A 'Power Spot' is a place which offers  peace, empowerment, and healing. When i arrived on the site, I felt all of this instantly, even imagined Don Juan jumping up and down laughing and saying, "you found one!"

I had no idea what to do with the power spot, but I remained on the spot and in silence all day.
All I did know was that once a power spot is found, it is both a gift, and a responsibilty to manage the energy of that power spot

I had never created art with rocks, but the rocks were everywhere, and my curiosity eventually led to balancing the amazing variety of rocks all collected on a flat rock river bed.

The art of balancing rocks was inspired by Taoism, Physics, and research of Indigenous cultures and traditions. Also the fine art education helped to see the naturally sculptured characters and figure of the rocks.

The site and most of the region is unceded Anishinaabe-Algonquin territory, and there has never been a treaty signed to transfer the land to the Canada.

The project, sponsored & funded by the National Capital Commission, since 2000, has allowed an un-compromised evolution of the project, as well as validating the heritage & unique environment on the Kichi Sibi (Ottawa) River.
